At Nexmo, the Vonage API platform, we have visualised all the work across the Product and Engineering teams. There is a full line of sight from the strategic goals down to the smallest task. It has changed how people understand and talk about work, it has increased understanding of dependencies between teams and how teams work together, and it has improved the flow of work.

We have visualised the work digitally which is seen as the source of truth. In addition, we have built a physical portfolio wall. It is in front of this wall that the entire Product team has their Portfolio conversations and where many people come to have ad-hoc discussions. The visualisation of the work has really moved the exercise from process towards people and interactions.

This is a story of the journey at Nexmo over the last 2.5 years to help the Product organisation to improve how they are working as the company evolves from startup through acquisition to enterprise. Visualisation of the work has been a key ingredient in this journey. We’ll discuss some of the goals, experiments and learnings we encountered along the way.
